Manuel Rivero O.P.

Good evening dear friends of the Rosary. We will meditate on the painful mysteries of the Rosary in the light of the teachings of a great mystic, a brother preacher called today a Dominican, in the 13th century, Master Eckhart. He belonged to the Rhenish School. Today we will address Christ Jesus helped by the spiritual conversations of Master Echkart granted to Dominican novices in Germany between 1294 and 1298.

He teaches in Paris, Strasbourg and Germany. For him, God remains the hidden God announced by the prophet Isaiah and beyond all concepts, known as unknown: the unspeakable God who comes to live in man. Negative knowledge of God, apophaticism, we know about God what he is not.

It is the love that unites loving God and beloved humanity. But for this, the disciple of Jesus the Christ must experience detachment, the renunciation of his own will, of his ego, to receive his true self in grace as a free gift from God.

Mystics are like diamonds. Nothing looks like a real diamond like a fake diamond. The true mystic participates in the Mystery of God which is charity. We recognize the value of mystics by their fruits. A good mystic bears good fruit. He does not lead to himself but to God. He renounces everything to receive everything from God, like the paschal mystery of death and resurrection of Jesus. “Todo y nada”, said Saint John of the Cross. You have to go through nothing, through death, to achieve resurrection. The starting point of spiritual life, the alpha point, is indeed renunciation, nothing, to reach the omega point, in the resurrected Christ. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus exclaimed: “Everything is grace! « .

This mystical life is not reserved for a few religious people outside the world but for all the baptized, immersed in the annihilation of Christ’s death and glorified in his resurrection. The mystical life does not depend on geographical places like monasteries nor academic knowledge of learned theologians but of a state of mind: faith acting in charity, following Jesus.

This is how every Christian ascends to the Father through Jesus, traveling the path of the cross and exulting in the new birth of spiritual resurrection. In this sense, every baptized person is called to become a mystic, with a Christian vision of man and history. Through his supernatural soul, man opens himself to the life of God. Through his faith in God who walks with humanity, history does not appear as chaos but as a succession of deaths and resurrections where Jesus the Christ acts in synergy with believers to elevate them towards God the Father.

Let us make the sign of the cross, the sign of love which renounces even unto death and which bears fruit like the grain of wheat fallen into the ground which becomes an ear.

All: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Credo. Our Father. 3 Ave Maria. Gloria.

First painful mystery: Gethsemane. From the Gospel according to Saint Mark 14.32 f: “Arriving at an area called Gethsemane, Jesus said to his disciples: “Stay here while I pray. » Then he takes with him Peter, James and John, and he begins to feel fear and anguish. And he said to them: “My soul is sad to death; stay here and watch.” Having gone a little further, he fell to the ground, and he prayed that, if it were possible; this hour passed away from him. And he said: “Abba (Father)! everything is possible for you: take this cup away from me; However, not what I want, but what you want! « .

Praying does not mean reciting prayers but entering into Jesus’ prayer: “Abba (Father)! everything is possible for you: take this cup away from me; However, not what I want, but what you want! « . Prayer of filial abandonment to the will of God the Father in renunciation.

Many people seek an effective prayer to resolve their insoluble problems, the intercession of a saint who is stronger than the others…

Master Eckhart highlights the most effective prayer. This prayer does not find its strength in words but in the spirit of the one who prays. The most powerful prayer is indeed the one that comes from a renounced spirit: “The more the spirit is renounced, the stronger, more worthy, more useful, more praiseworthy and more perfect the prayer and work. » (Teachings to Dominican novices).

God listens to those who do not seek their personal interest but the good of God and their neighbor, detaching themselves from temporal goods. When the praying person is not tied to anything and he leaves his ego to accomplish the will of God, he receives everything from God.

It becomes illusory to imagine that it is by changing place that we will find peace and fulfillment. Liberation and salvation do not depend on geographical locations but on the deep attitude of the spirit. The challenge thrown by Jesus in the Gospel is to leave oneself. No need to dream of happiness that would be found abroad, in a monastery or in a hermitage, declares Master Eckhart. Dissatisfaction arises from one’s own, egocentric desire. Suffering comes not from the things themselves which hinder freedom but from the way of living daily realities: “It is you who hinders yourself in things”.

Peace does not reside in external things but in the renunciation of one’s pride and self-will. Those who travel far and wide in search of peace only stray from the goal to the extent that they do not renounce their will. And Maître Eckhart cites the first of the beatitudes, the basis of Christian life: “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (Mt 5:3) and further in the same Gospel of Saint Matthew: “He who wants to follow me, let him first deny himself” (Mt 16:24). In a word: “Leave yourself”.

God only gives himself to those who lose their footing, total control of their existence, to follow Jesus in faith: “God enters you with his whole being, to the extent that you strip yourself of yourself by all things « .

Detach yourself from things and creatures to attach yourself to God and receive everything as a free gift. It is not a question of falling into the void but of a disposition of the mind turned entirely towards God as the source of life: “He who attaches himself to God, God and all virtue attaches to him”. And this gift of oneself to God remains an enterprise never completed in the spiritual life because a renunciation calls for new renunciations to achieve perfection in the resurrection granted to the dead who die in faith.

Let us pray for those who seek God and for those who have cast Him aside.

Let us pray that Christians will discover the richness of baptismal life and the treasures of the mystical teachings of the Catholic Church.

Let us pray for those who have left the Church in search of mystical experiences in other religions without having tasted the infinite and happy Wisdom of the Bible, the Fathers of the Church and Christian mystics.

Our father. Ave Maria. Gloria

Second painful mystery: Jesus before the Sanhedrin.

From the Gospel according to Saint Mark 14, 63: “Some began to spit in the face of Jesus, to slap him and to say to him: “Prophet!” » And the valets beat him.

Trials and persecutions can become an opportunity for improvement in the faith of the Christian, who discovers the strength of God in his weakness. Master Eckhart quotes Saint Paul: “Virtue is perfected in infirmity” (2 Cor 12:9).

But God remains loving in the heart of pain and contradiction: “God is hidden in the depths of the soul”. And the love of God grows in proportion to faith acting through charity. Without comfort, without health, without success, the Christian is not separated from God, his consolation: “The friends of God are never without consolation”.

Let us pray for Christians persecuted because of their faith.

Let us pray for those who despair in trials.

Let us pray for those who are drawn to suicide, without hope.

Our father. Hail Mary. Gloria.

Third painful mystery: The crowning of thorns.

From the Gospel according to Saint Mark 15, 16f: “The soldiers took Jesus inside the palace, which is the Praetorium, and they summoned the whole cohort. They clothe him in purple, then, having woven a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

Fourth painful mystery: carrying the cross.

From the Gospel according to Saint Mark 15, 21f: “The soldiers required to carry the cross of Jesus, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was passing by, returning from the fields. And they bring Jus to a place called Golgotha, which translates to the place of the Skull. »

Simon of Cyrene encountered God in the person of Jesus suffering on the road to Calvary. He came home tired after working in the fields and suddenly he was chosen by a Roman soldier to help Jesus carry his cross. What seemed to the world like a chore and a moment of bad luck turned out to be an event of grace. Freed from evil through contact with the holiness of Jesus, his spirit prayed to the rhythm of the sacred Heart of Jesus. He addressed a few words to him which are part of the secret in Heaven.

Hail Mary. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud cry: “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachtani,” which translates: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? « .

On the cross, the body of Jesus carries within it the sins of all humanity. Like a sponge soaked in vinegar and gall, the holy body of Jesus is soaked in sin, that is, the rejection of God in ignorance and pride. “God made him sin for us,” writes Saint Paul (2 Cor 5:21). It is this sin of the world taken by him which feels the abandonment of God well beyond the physical tortures of the cross: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? « .

But God did not abandon his beloved Son who stripped himself of the glory that was his since before the foundation of the world to fulfill the loving will of God the Father who wants the salvation of humanity.“God only acts according to his own will,” teaches Master Eckhart. This is why God exalts his Son Jesus in the resurrection because he accomplished the mission entrusted to him: “It is finished”.

“Man must learn in all gifts to disappropriate himself and to keep nothing of his own, nor seek anything, nor utility, nor pleasure, nor intimacy ; neither sweetness, nor reward, nor kingdom of heaven, nor self-will.

God has never given himself and he never gives himself in a will that is foreign to him. He only gives himself to his own will. But where God finds his will, then he gives himself and lets himself enter into this will with all that he is. The more we disincorporate ourselves from ourselves, the more truly we incorporate ourselves into him,” Master Eckhart teaches the Dominican novices

Death represents the absolute renunciation of life; total deprivation, limitless poverty. Far from being the final fall into emptiness and nothingness, death brings man closer to his resurrection. It is to be celebrated as the major act of a life and the summit of an existence, the gateway to eternal Life. “I do not die, I enter life,” declared Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Union of the believing will of Christians with the will of God. Communion of wills, transforming in love.

Let us pray that death will be celebrated with dignity in our churches.

Let us pray that the Lord grants us to die fulfilling His will.

Let us pray for those who died today or who will die tonight.

Our father.
